0 The Lonely Road of Freelance
Lately I’ve been dealing hard with loneliness. Its something about being in your own home 8-12 hours a day by yourself that makes one want to start knocking off squirrels outside the complex. Sigh.
Don’t worry though, I won’t be killing squirrels anytime soon. But I am driving myself mad. Sometimes I forget to eat and take care of normal everyday tasks that I would religiously remember if I were working in an office for an employer.
Bringing things back home
For a while now I’ve been sourcing opportunities on the west coast mainly because they typically pay more than mid-western opportunities (starting to change, though). However, while the money is good, the human relation is almost if not completely non-existent. It’s kind of painful actually.
This past week I’ve decided to bring things back home, working primarily with folks in Minnesota. Also, my career focus has changed somewhat from doing whatever with whomever to focused commitment and loyalty toward a single entity. More specifically I’m pushing to work with web start-ups on who are doing software as a service. The lifespan of these companies are quite risky in terms of dependability for the long-term. But I think the return and reward are much greater in comparison to the risk. Besides, the start-up culture will never die.
Web-related Events in the Twin Cities
I went to my first web-related event last week known as Minnebar (Barcamp in Minnesota). It was amazing and it was good being around the web culture aside from Twitter. Plus speaking to actual humans for a change was refreshing. However there are apparently a lot of these kinds of events happening regularly on smaller levels throughout the Twin Cities. Think I’m going to start going to them.
