1 Gas and the Economy

I don’t blurb much about the economy or politics, but these gas prices are stirring some frustration in me and it must come out!

One question that constantly lingers is why people aren’t forcing the demand upward for public transportation and other alternatives. Gas prices keep going up and people continue purchasing gas. We’re being forced to make decisions between putting food on the table and getting to work next week. In the midst of all this, transportation systems sit idly by as ridership generally plateaus the minute gas prices go down a few cents.

We do it to ourselves

Frankly, we can’t blame government, high-grossing oil companies nor the cars we drive. We can only blame ourselves. Our government is as addicted to oil as the people it governs. So many states are trying to support better fuel economy by implementing programs for carpooling and other transport/commute solutions. But no one is listening, nor responding.

We prefer convenience over practicality and this preference comes at a high cost. Some folks are seeing fuel costs spreading up to $175+ a month. Why is the cost of fuel nearly competing with the cost of making payments on a car? It’s rather absurd.

Time to get our hands dirty

Find a bike and ride it, get a transit pass and take a bus, hook up with some co-works and work out a carpool for the morning commute to work. Those are just a small portion of the things you can do. Discover the world outside of your car. If people would actually stop giving in to oil and traditional fuel, something might actually change. But until then, expect to sit in the same exact cesspool of political irresponsibility we are in.
